Western India tops in receiving unwanted gifts: Survey

Indians might love freebies but are choosy about what they get when it comes to the utility of the gifts received.

As many as three-fourths of the people in the Western cities of the country do not like the gifts they receive, according to a survey.

However, the national average is too small with only 16 per cent of the people polled saying so, though in Mumbai, it is one-third, says the survey carried out among 5,300 people across 16 cities by online classifieds player OLX and market research firm IMRB International.

Of the people who receive gifts in urban areas, one out of every six receives gifts that are of no use to them. It has found that dissatisfied people are higher in the Western part of the country, especially in Mumbai.

"In the West, three out of four people said the gifts they receive are unwanted. One in three Mumbaiites said the gifts they received were unwanted, the highest across the metros," it said.

Among the unwanted gifts, clothing and crockery, kitchen utensils top the list, followed by toys, showpieces, books, personal items, utility items, gift vouchers, cards, electronic items, food and beverages, bed sheets and linen.

However, almost 75 per cent of the people hoard these unwanted gifts. Also, 20 per cent of the unwanted gifts are re-gifted, the survey found.
