The police resorted to lathicharge at the Khardah station in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal after an altercation took place between the female and male passengers.

The altercation took place at around 8.30 in the morning triggered by a recent decision taken by the Railway Board. Starting Monday, the ladies special local train— Matribhumi special, was to offer three of its coaches for men.

However, the women passengers condemned such a move by the Railway Board and agitated at the station for several hours. Later, the men and women got into a scuffle and even pelted stones at each other. This led to the police resorting to a lathicharge to disperse these agitators.

In the lathicharge, as many as seven people were injured, including one policeman and a woman. All the injured were admitted to the nearby hospital.

“Since the Matribhumi special train operates during peak office hours and a major part of the train remains empty, the railway board decided to convert three of its coaches into general compartments, so that the men can board the train,” Ravi Mahaptra, CPRO, Eastern Railway told dna.
