The West Bengal state cabinet on Tuesday cleared the proposal for changing the state's name. The new name is likely to be 'Banga' or 'Bangla' in Bengali and 'Bengal' in English.

Sources in the cabinet reveal that a special session of the Bengal Legislative Assembly will commence on August 26 for the clearance of the proposal ahead of it being sent for consideration to the Parliament.

If the Parliament clears the proposal of the name change, it will raise the state from the 28th position alphabetically to the 4th position.

The name change will help Bengal MPs in the Parliament raise issues in the first half during the session. Usually, the MPs get a chance to speak in the second half, after the lunch recess, where there are fewer MPs present in the house.
