West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee intervened four days after junior doctors struck work protesting brutal assault of a doctor by a patient's family at Nil Ratan Sarkar Medical College and Hospital. But she failed to end the impasse as the doctors defied her.

Banerjee reached the SSKM hospital in South Kolkata on Thursday morning and issued an ultimatum. "The doctors must get back to work by 2pm as the protests have affected services at government hospitals across the state. Those doctors who don't return to work must leave the hostel. Agitating doctors are outsiders."

Drawing a parallel with policmen, she said, "Policemen die in the line of duty but the police don't go on a strike."

SEETHING DIDI TRAINS GUN AT BJP

  • After the striking junior doctors refused follow Mamata’s ultimatum to join work, she accused the BJP of giving the incident communal colour

  • Ever since BJP’s super show in the Lok Sabha polls in WB, the CM has been targeting the party over almost all issues

The CM added, "The state spends Rs 25 lakh on each doctor and then they shirk work. This won't be tolerated. Are they doctors?"

Mamata then diverted her anger towards the BJP claiming that the party was adding communal colours to this incident.

Slammed for not even visiting protesting doctors since the outrage over Monday's assault on the junior doctor, the protesters raised slogans against the CM on her arrival at the SSKM hospital.

On the other hand, junior doctors held their ground. The doctors have demanded deployment of armed police officers on hospital premises and ensure their safety and security.

Meanwhile, a delegation from Nil Ratan Sarkar hospital met Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi and briefed him about the situation.

On Monday, an elderly patient died at NRS Medical College and Hospital. Relatives of deceased person claimed medical negligence and beat up two junior doctors. One of them, Paribaha Mukhpadhyay, suffered a skull fracture and is presently undergoing treatment at a city hospital. Since Monday night, junior doctors are on a strike and demanding safety from the government and police.
