Police on Sunday recovered a huge of arms from an illegal factory in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. Over 100 arms and ammunition were recovered from a house in Santoshpur. Most of the arms were semi-finished, which points toward an illegal manufacturing unit existing in the area.

“From a house in Santoshpur, we have recovered hundreds of semi-finished arms and a huge cache of ammunition. Besides that, we have recovered seven 7mm pistols and twenty-two 9mm pistols. Other recoveries range from gas cutters to lead machines. We had specific inputs and when we conducted the raid, we found a full-fledged illegal arms factory existing in the area,” said Chandrasekhar Bardhan, Additional Superintendent of Police, West, South 24 Parganas District.

Preliminary investigations reveal that one person had rented the house from landlord, Samsher Ali and later got labourers from Bihar to manufacture arms in this particular house. Investigators told reporters on Sunday that the house had been sound-proofed and a music system would play to prevent any sound from being heard outside.

“We have also begun an investigation into the case to find out which state the consignment was meant for. The gang might have its roots in other states too. However, existence of similar illegal arms factories in the district cannot be ruled out at this moment,” added Bardhan.

While the police arrested the landlord of the house on charges of harbouring anti-socials, all the others, including the mastermind, are at large. Meanwhile, the police have registered a case and have begun a lookout for all the accused.

This is the third such illegal arms factory that the police stumbled upon within a span of a month in the same district.

On September 9, a similar factory came to light in Maheshtala’s Rabindranagar and on September 27, police found another illegal arms manufacturing unit at Baruipur.
