The State Election Commission (SEC) has issued a fresh notification which will extend the deadline for filing nomination in the panchayat polls till April 23. The notification came after nine of the 10 political parties were invited over to the SEC office.

According to the notification by the SEC, the scrutiny of nominations would be done on April 25 and April 28 will be the last date for withdrawal of nominations

The date for the poll process would be finalised on April 23 after a fresh round of meetings with the representatives of the state government, including Saurav Das, an officer on special duty (OSD) of the state Panchayat department.

"It has been decided that in a fresh notification on Saturday, it would be declared that nomination would be filed on Monday, April 23 as well. There has been no discussion on the date of poll process," Das said.

Earlier on Saturday, state election commissioner AK Singh met nine of the 10 political parties to discuss matters on the West Bengal Panchayat polls. The BJP representatives had alleged that they were not allowed to enter the SEC office. Later, it was found that around four to five BJP representatives had gone to the SEC office whereas only two representatives per party were allowed.

"Under the instruction of the state government, the SEC did not allow the BJP leaders to enter the office. We have submitted a letter to the SEC saying that the High Court had directed the SEC to take a decision after talking to all the political parties concerned," said BJP leader Mukul Roy.

Centre Lauds State

In another development, the Centre lauded Bengal for excellence in revenue management. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee through a Facebook post said, “You will be happy to know that the Indian government has congratulated West Bengal for rapidly bringing down the revenue gap in the state GST and registering a revenue surplus in March 2018.”
