Basirhat in North 24 Pargana district of West Bengal turned into a virtual war zone over BJP's political gathering on Monday afternoon. The gathering was held under the leadership of state BJP President Dilip Ghosh. They were looking to violate the law symbolically as a mark of protest against the state government. However, according to the saffron party, police lathicharged in the gathering and several BJP workers were injured. They were admitted to local hospital. Many BJP workers were also rounded up for violating the law.

BJP's protest rally started around noon in Basirhat. First Dilip Ghosh addressed the workers, and then they marched towards the district magistrate's office. There was already heavy police presence in the area. According to Zee 24 Ghanta, BJP workers hurled bricks towards the police and the security men started to use lathis to quell the demonstrators. Soon the place turned into a war zone and the BJP workers were dispersed.

According to Dilip Ghosh, the bricks were hurled by outsiders who were not part of the gathering. According to him, police was wrong in attacking the workers of the saffron party. At least 50 workers are in the hospital, said Bengal state president. North 24 pargana TMC district President Jyotipriyo Mullick has alleged BJP of attacking police just for the sake of power grab. He has demanded Dilip Ghosh to be hauled up for this event.

Basirhat s one of the key seats which BJP is eyeing to win in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Amit Shah has already set a steep target of 22 out of 42 seats in Bengal for the state unit. Currently the party only has 2 MPs from West Bengal.
