West Bengal: Junior doctors 'assault' father of an infant patient

A group of junior doctors in Burdwan Medical College and Hospital allegedly assaulted a man and his relatives on Monday for repeatedly asking them to start the treatment of his 6-month-old son, police said. 

Rezaul Rahman lodged a complaint with the police that his son was suffering from dysentery and was admitted to the hospital. Police said quoting the complaint said even though the child's condition was deteriorating, the doctors did not attend to him.

When he repeated requested the junior doctors to start his son's treatment, he was abused and assaulted by them. When his wife and mother-in-law came to his help, they were also beaten up by the junior doctors, he alleged.

Dr Kaustuv Nag, head of the children's ward, however, said it was the child's family members who beat up the doctors first. Efforts are on to settle the matter through discussion,Nag said.

Meanwhile, the child's treatment has started and he is fine now, he said.
