The incessant rain since July 22 has shown signs of slowing down since Wednesday, but several districts of the state are still flooded.

West Midnapore

Various areas of this district are under water. Kangsabati river has flooded adjoining areas such as Gopalpur South, Joykrishnapur, and Domghat. District administration has alerted all the police stations. Speedboats have been engaged to rescue stranded people.

Out of 17 wards of Ghatal Municipality, 13 are underwater, affecting about 50,000 people.

Birbhum

It is one of the worst affected districts in the state. Knee-high water is seen on Labhpur-Katwa state highway. National Highway 60 is also under water.

Hooghly

Large areas of Arambagh and Khanakul in this district are flooded. Acres of farmland have gone under water. Affected people have been removed to government schools which have become flood relief camps. SDPO office at Arambagh have also been flooded.

People are complaining of lack of drinking water, baby food and medicines.

Purulia

Jamuna and Dwarkeswar rivers have submerged the adjoining areas. Water has flooded the basement of Purulia sub division hospital and has stopped lift services affecting patient movement at the hospital. PWD officials have been deployed at various flood-affected areas to deal with the situation.

Murshidabad

About 500 persons have been affected because of Dwarka river here. Kandi-Behrampore state highway is under water.

Bankura

Most places in the district has water up to one's waist. Almost all drinking water taps have gone under water causing a scarcity of potable water.

Burdwan

Water from many areas of Durgapur sub division of this district is yet to recede, even after it stopped raining here. Schools and clubs have turned into relief camps.

State irrigation minister Rajiv Banerjee said flood affected districts have received record rainfall from July 20 to 25. "Compared to the normal rainfall received in July, this year, Bankura has received 754 per cent, Burdwan 334 per cent, Birbhum 313 per cent, East Midnapore 500 per cent, West Midnapore 424 per cent, Howrah 427 per cent, Hooghly 359 per cent, Kolkata 367 per cent, Murshidabad 174 per cent, and Purulia 721 per cent more rainfall. The cumulative rainfall received in Birbhum from July 20 to 26 is over 600 mm," Banerjee said.

DVC sources said that in the last three days, over 2 lakh cusec of water has been released. On Wednesday about 75,000 cusec of water has been released and it was found out more water will be released.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had earlier alleged that the Centre had not been maintaining DVC barrage properly. "Cleaning and dredging of DVC is long overdue," she said.
