West Bengal govt issues guidelines for bi-weekly complete lockdown, containment zones

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had earlier announced that bi-weekly complete lockdown in West Bengal will be on August 2, 5, 8, 9, 16, 17, 22, 23, 29, 30. Further, lockdown in containment zones across the state will continue till August 31. Here is the state government guidelines for August.

A day after the Centre issued the guidelines for the third phase of Unlock (Unlock 3), West Bengal government issued separate guidelines for the state including the list of days when there will be complete lockdown. 

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had earlier announced that bi-weekly complete lockdown in West Bengal will be on August 2, 5, 8, 9, 16, 17, 22, 23, 29, 30.

Further, lockdown in containment zones across the state will continue till August 31. 

As per the notification issued by the state government, all schools and educational institutions will remain closed. Coaching centres, colleges, educational training /coaching institutions will also mot be allowed to open. 

Cinema halls, swimming pools, entertainment parks, theatres, bars, auditoriums and assembly halls are also prohibited from offering services.

Social, political, sports, entertainment, academic, cultural, religious functions and other large congregations are also banned in the state. 

However, Yoga institutes and gymnasiums outside the containment zones will be allowed to function from August 5, 2020.

During the complete lockdown, all government and private offices; commercial establishments; public and private transport including train and flight movements will be closed completely. 

Health services including the movement of health personnel, patients by public and private transport, medicine shops and pharmacies will be allowed to function.

Law and order, courts, correctional services, fire and emergency services are also exempted. 

Electricity, water and conservancy services, continuous process industries and industries with in-house workers, agriculture operations, tea garden operations in field, intrastate and interstate movement of goods, e-Commerce, capital and debt market services as notified by RBI, print, electronic media and social media, and home delivery of cooked food are also allowed during the complete lockdown.

Earlier, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday announced the extension of lockdown in containment zones across the state till August 31. 

Last week, the state government announced  complete lockdown on two days of the week in addition to broad-based lockdown in containment zones.

This week, however, will not see complete lockdown on Saturday, August 1 due to Eid-al-Adha festival. There will be lockdown in containment zones on August 1 and complete lockdown on Sunday. 

There will also not be complete lockdown on Monday, August 3 because of Raksha Bandhan. Next bi-weekly lockdown will be enforced on August 8-9 (Saturday, Sunday).

According to the latest available data, the number of positive COVID-19 cases in West Bengal has surged to 65,258, with the majority of cases from Kolkata, North 24 Parganas and Howrah districts. 

The state reported 2,294 new cases and 41 deaths on Wednesday. The case tally in the state includes 19,652 active cases and 1,490 deaths.
