On Thursday, a group of young men travelling in a car ran over three girls, killing one and seriously injuring two others. It was around 5 PM, when three girls were on their way to coaching classes on cycle. The girls were cycling on National Highway 41 near Tajpur, when a Swift Dzire with three young men in it started following the girls.

Eye-witnesses claim that the men in the car were teasing the girls and were hurling sleazy comments at them. Later, they started chasing the girls. A few minutes later, the girls were seen running for their life when the vehicle started chasing them in full speed.

Later, the vehicle ran over the three girls, killing one of them and injuring the other two. The injured girls were immediately shifted to the Tamluk hospital where they are undergoing treatment. Their situation continued to remain serious, till the last reports came in.

Immediately after running over the girls, the car lost control and fell into a road-side ditch. Later, the men tried to flee from the spot but the locals handed them over to the police and the three of them were arrested.  According to sources in the district police, all the accused belong to Haldia-based affluent families. None of them had a valid driver’s license and were amateurs behind the wheel.

The deceased and the two injured girls are students of class 11 of the Tajpur Higher Secondary School and lived in the vicinity.
