The rescue operations were stalled on Thursday morning at Darjeeling following fresh landslides.

The NDRF teams that reached Darjeeling, are not being able to reach the worse-hit Mirik, as all roads connecting Mirik are cut off. NDRF jawans are walking several kilometres and the excavators used to remove debris are stationed at faraway places as the road connectivity is lost triggered by massive landslides.

The West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who reached Darjeeling to monitor the rescue operation is stranded near Kalimpong.

Banerjee was to take the only alternative route to Mirik -- Goyabadi. But, following a fresh landslide last night the Goyabadi route is also cut off.

Alternative arrangements are being made for the Chief Minister to reach Mirik.

On the other hand, railways services and traffic movement along all the major roads, including NH-10, continue to be disrupted for the third day in a row.

Meanwhile, the figure of death toll rose to 40 with several others missing.

"Administration is working round the clock to complete all procedures to hand over bodies of the victims to their families for their last rites, for which assistance is being provided by the local administration," Banerjee said in post.
