Four policemen were injured, two of them seriously, when a mob turned its ire on a patrol team after a cyclist was injured by its vehicle in Katwa of Burdwan district on Saturday.

Superintendent of Police SMH Mirza said the four police personnel including an officer of Assistant Sub-Inspector rank from Katwa police station were dragged out of the vehicle by the mob and beaten up after the patrol van accidentally hit a cyclist injuring the youth at Daihat More. The vehicle was then set ablaze.

Of the four injured, two constables had to be admitted to Katwa Hospital while the rest were given first aid. The cyclist, who suffered foot injury, was later rushed to the hospital by police and his condition was stable, Mirza said.

A bigger police contingent, led by Additional SP (Rural) Paresnath Chowdhury and SDPO Dhruba Das, went to the spot and brought the situation under control, the SP said. Raids were being conducted in the area to net those involved in the attack on the police team.
