Jadavpur University Professor Ambikesh Mahapatra who was arrested for forwarding emails with cartoons mocking Mamata Banerjee has decided to take the electoral plunge.

Rights group Aakranta Aamraa (We are attacked) announced his name as candidate from Behala East constituency, reports IANS.

Ambikesh Mahapatra is standing as an independent candidate and will be soliciting support of Left, Congress and BJP. His agenda is to take on the 'oppressive' TMC government of the state.

Mahapatra, who was arrested in 2012, was quoted as saying,  "We have sought the support of all the political parties which are opposed to the Trinamool. I am not fighting for myself but for the people of this state, none of whom are safe under this regime." The forum said that they are putting a candidate on an experimental basis so that the voice of the common people could reach the Assembly.

Interestingly, so far neither Left or Congress have announced candidates for Behala East constituency. Hence, there is a speculation regarding whether they have decided to extend support to Ambikesh Mahapatra. He will be facing off against TMC heavyweight and current MLA Sovan Chatterjee, who is also Kolkata's mayor.
