Amid slogans, giant cut-outs of the "sickle, hammer and star" CPI-M party symbol, and 'hand' symbol of Congress stood together on the jeeps trailing former CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee's convoy, as the rally wound its way through large parts of Kasba, Tollygunge and Jadavpur constituencies, once red citadels.

Senior CPI-M leader and former West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Tuesday took the centrestage at a Left-Congress joint road show to canvass votes for the alliance candidates.
Bhattacharjee, whose government's land acquisition policy had been widely held to be responsible for the Left's rout in the 2011 Assembly election, was once again his ebullient self, smiling and waving at the surging crowd at the show.
Standing atop an open-hooded jeep accompanied by Sujan Chakraborty, the party's candidate from Jadavpur constituency, Bhattacharjee was seen often stooping to shake hands with people. Hundreds of Congress workers participated in the road show along with Left workers, from Dhakuria to Garia in south Kolkata, a distance of eight kms, presenting a sight never witnessed before in the political history of Bengal, giving muscle to the alliance.

The local Congress leadership was present in strength waving party flags and shouting slogans in favour of the alliance, which has been described by Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee as 'unprincipled'.
As the convoy passed through the gates of the Jadavpur University falling under the Jadavpur constituency from where the former chief minister suffered an ignominious defeat at the
hands of TMC's Manish Gupta in the 2011 election, students waved at the leader.
The entire stretch from Dhakuria to Garia was the traditional Left stronghold where the Trinamool Congress made giant inroads in the 2011 Assembly election.
