In a setback to West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, Election Commission has decided to show-cause her for allegedly violating model code of conduct.

Mamata Banerjee is accused of violating poll code in an election rally in Asansol where she announced the creation of a new district.

She has to answer the notice within a fixed time-frame failing which EC can take action against her. Reacting to the show-cause, a defiant Mamata Banerjee has justified her announcement saying she would do it again, reports Zee 24 Ghanta.

"Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been show caused by the commission. The show cause has been issued as she had made a promise during a public rally about the creation of Asansol district. She has violated the poll code," said Chief Election Commissioner, Dr. Nasim Zaidi.

Zaidi said this while addressing media after holding meetings with all political parties and senior police officials.

This is the second blow to TMC on Thursday after the Ethics Committee of Lok Sabha sought explanation from five Trinamool Congress MPs, who were allegedly caught in a sting operation accepting cash last month. A source said that the panel, headed by BJP MP LK Advani, has asked the TMC members to explain their position in the matter.

The panel had earlier asked news portal Narada News, which had released video tapes of the sting, about the source of the clips and whether it stood by the sting operation.

The panel is understood to have sought the explanation from the MPs after getting the response of the news portal.
