West Bengal Election 2021: Phase five polling begins, 342 candidates in fray

Campaigning for phase five ended on April 14, with the EC having increased the silence period from 48 to 72 hours in view of the Cooch Behar violence.

Amid a raging second wave of COVID-19, the fifth phase of the West Bengal Assembly Elections will be held on Saturday (April 17), 2021.

The polling will start at 7 am and will end at 6 pm. A total of 45 assembly constituencies will go to poll on Saturday where over one crore voters will decide the fate of 342 candidates.

The districts going to polls on April 17 are North 24 Parganas, Purba Bardhaman, Nadia, Jalpaiguri, and Darjeeling Kalimpong districts. Voting will be held at 15,789 polling stations in the 45 constituencies.

The constituencies going to poll in phase 5 elections are:

Dhupguri, Rajganj, Nagrakata, Kurseong, Phansidewa, Krishnaganj, Chakdaha, Panihati, Dum Dum, Rajarhat Gopalpur, Deganga, Sandeshkhali, Hingalganj, Raina, Kalna, Maynaguri, Dabgram, Phulbari, Kalimpong, Matigara-Naxalbari, Santipur, Ranaghat Dakshin, Ranaghat Uttar Purba, Ranaghat Uttar Paschim, Kalyani, Kamarhati, Rajarhat New Town, Madhyamgram, Haroa, Basirhat Dakshin, Basirhat Uttar, Khandaghosh, Jamalpur, Memari, Jalpaiguri, Mal Jalpaiguri ST, Darjeeling, Siliguri, Haringhata, Baranagar, Bidhannagar, Barasat, Minakhan, Bardhaman Dakshin, Bardhaman Uttar, Manteswar

Political leaders 

Prominent names in the fifth phase include Siliguri Mayor and Left Front leader Ashok Bhattacharya, state ministers Gautam Deb and Bratya Basu and BJP's Samik Bhattacharya.

Security 

In view of the violence witnessed in phase four elections, which led to the death of five people in Cooch Behar, including four in CISF firing, security measures have been heightened for phase five elections.

Measures will be taken to ensure strict adherence of COVID-19 protocols during the voting process.

West Bengal Assembly Elections will take place in eight phases this year out of which four phases have already been conducted. Results will be declared on May 4.
