At least ten persons died and four persons fell sick allegedly after consuming spurious liquor at two villages in East Midnapore district.

Till Sunday, the death toll was 8, but on Monday two more people expired after consuming spurious hooch. 16 people have been arrested in connection to this unfortunate incident.

On Sunday, SP Alok Rajoria told PTI that the eight deaths were reported from Narikeldaha and Kiyarana villages in Moyna police station limits in East Midnapore district adding that two persons have been arrested in this connection so far.

"Four persons from Narikeldanga village died on Saturday and four from Kiyarana expired on Sunday. But it's still under investigation whether they perished after consuming spurious liquor or not. We have sent our team to look into the matter," Rajoria said.

One person was admitted to a local facility while three were taken to the 'Purba Medinipur Zilla Hospital' in Tamluk after they complained of sickness, the SP said. "This has triggered panic in the area and people are rushing to hospitals even because of slightest uneasiness," he stated. Series of raids are on at different places in and around Moyna Tehsil as part of the investigation, Rajoria said.
