West Bengal polls: EC to register FIR against TMC leader Sohrab Ali for trespassing polling booth

Incident happened at Burdwan district’s Ranigunj at polling booth number-50.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) said on Monday, that the commission will register an FIR against Trinamool Congress leader Sohrab Ali for trespassing a polling station amidst elections.  “There was one incident in Burdwan district’s Ranigunj at polling booth number-50, where a candidate, along with her husband entered the polling station. We have initiated disciplinary action against the Presiding officer and we will register an FIR against that person who trespassed the polling booth,” said deputy election commissioner, Sandeep Saxena.  

The overall poll percentage till 5pm across all the 31 constituencies spread across three districts – Burdwan, Bankura and West Midnapore stood at 79.56%. The finally tally about the total poll percentage will be notified by the commission later.

Meanwhile, the commission described the second part of the first phase of polls as peaceful. “We have not encountered any incident of violence inside or outside the polling premises or the booths,” added Saxena.

Barring sporadic cases of violence in the first two hours of polling and few stray incidents over the day, the polling was peaceful.  

However, opposition parties – Left Front and Congress alleged rigging and booth capturing in some parts of Bengal.
