The BJP on Monday asked West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee why she is scared of the CBI and charged that she was demonstrating a dharna to save herself from inquiry. Three Union ministers launched fresh salvo against the TMC supremo on Monday as her dharna entered the second day.

Referring to her dharna, Union minister Prakash Javadekar said, "Is it to hide evidence? The chit fund scamster in his testimony had said there is one red diary. There is a diary and a pen drive." The government says that the mentioned items are missing. It added that a witness had talked about turning them over, but the police never included them on the evidence list.

Javadekar also pointed out that it was not his party but Rahul Gandhi's Congress that had filed a petition in the Supreme Court asking for an investigation into the chit fund scams.

In response to Mamata calling the situation in Kolkata an "emergency", Javadekar said, "This is not Narendra Modi's emergency but Mamata Banerjee's emergency in Bengal. She is on a dharna to save herself from the CBI." The constitutional mechanism, he said, had clearly failed.

Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar was being protected as he knew some "secrets". He said that the same Mamata who did not even make a remark when some people were arrested in connection with the case was now choosing to sit on 'dharna' (sit-in) to "save" Rajeev Kumar, who appeared to be "a secret-keeper" in Saradha chit fund scam.

"Why is she so distraught on the arrest of an IPS officer? The suspicious circumstances surrounding all this clearly indicates that the Commissioner knows a lot. Therefore he has to be saved," he said.

Union minister Smriti Irani also followed suit. "The fact that paramilitary forces had to be deployed for the protection of (CBI) officers who were doing their duty, is an unprecedented view given to the citizen with regards to the state of anarchy in the West Bengal," she said.

The BJP also took potshots at Congress chief Rahul Gandhi for his tweet expressing support for Mamata.

Missing Items

Prakash Javadekar alleges Mamata is trying to hide evidence — a diary and a pen drive which an witness had talked about during probe but were not included on the list of evidence.
