West Bengal: Clashes at Burdwan University after TMC workers hit demonstrating students including females

Students saying externals attacked them.

In a late night development, massive clashes erupted at Burdwan University in West Bengal on Friday. 

Students of Burdwan University were staging a demonstration, when Trinamool Congress workers’ union members allegedly barged into the university campus and started beating up students to disperse them. Members, sporting wooden sticks did not spare female students and they suffered serious injuries. Workers’ union members allegedly went on a rampage and ransacked the university campus. 

When students tried to resist the attackers, more members were brought in and threatened them with dire consequences. But, some students managed to catch hold of the attackers, however, they fled later. 

Students claim that they were attacked by outsiders and the ones who attacked them are not seen on campus.  Meanwhile, the vice chancellor of the university, Smriti Kumar Sarkar has taken cognizance of matter and said that she would carry out thorough investigation.  The students were staging a demonstration demanding the postponement of third year examinations when the clashes erupted.
