West Bengal BJP on Wednesday alleged widespread violence by the ruling TMC in the run-up to election to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation on April 18 and over 90 municipal bodies across the state on April 25.

The saffron party held a rally through different parts of the metropolis to protest against the alleged attack on party leader Roopa Ganguly at Gopalnagar in the southern part of the city on Tuesday. While Ganguly alleged that she had been attacked by Trinamool Congress workers, the ruling party claimed that it was the actress-turned-politician who had torn their party flag from a public meeting venue.

"There is violence in different parts of the state," Union Minister of State for Urban Development Babul Supriyo claimed while alleging that "a section of police are working like TMC cadres." He alleged that the police was turning a blind eye to complaints against ruling party members in different cases of poll-related violence. "In such a situation, I don't see much hope for free and fair elections," Supriyo claimed.

"The state of the law and order is quite evident in a state where a person like Roopa Ganguly can be attacked in broad daylight," BJP state president Rahul Sinha told newspersons at the end of the car rally. Rupa Ganguly, Supriyo and Sinha led the rally through different parts of the city.
