COVID-19: Careless about wearing mask? You will be heavily fined in these states

Wearing a mask is mandatory in India, and authorities have been cracking the whip on those who break the rule. Amidst a sudden surge in Covid-19 cases across Delhi and other Indian cities, Delhi announced a steep rise in fine, from Rs.500 to Rs.2000 for those caught without masks, in a bid to help control the coronavirus surge.

The Chief Minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal appealed to all political parties and social organisations to distribute masks at public places in Delhi.

Fine for not wearing masks in public places in Goa was doubled from Rs.100 to Rs.200. This was announced by the Chief Minister of the state, Pramod Sawant on Monday.

Sawant urged people not to visit beaches, airports, railway stations and bus stands without masks in order to control the pandemic.

As Gurugram battles third wave of the coronavirus pandemic, the Gurugram Police commissioner KK Rao on Monday issued an order in which it has been mentioned that the cops can attend any marriage events in the city without invitation and issue fines to those not wearing masks. 

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has given instructions to officials to ensure that people comply with the rule to wear masks when outside.

Gehlot tweeted, 'Also gave instructions to closely monitor containment efforts in areas where infection rate is high & to ensure that people comply with the rule to wear masks when outside.'

A groom was fined for not wearing a face mask during his wedding celebrations in Jaipur. The Jaipur Police fined the groom Rs 500 for not wearing a mask.

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had made it compulsory to wear a mask in public from the first week of April and has also levied fines since then for violating the order.

The fine for not wearing a mask in public place is Rs. 200. Till date, the BMC has taken action against over 40,000 rule violators and collected a fine of Rs 1.5 crore.

In wake of poor compliance of the norm making masks compulsory, the Uttar Pradesh government increased the penalty from Rs.100 to Rs.500 for not wearing a mask in public.

The Gujarat government in August itself increased the fine for not wearing mask in public places to Rs.1,000 from the present Rs.500.

The decision came after the Gujarat High Court in its order asked the government to collect a minimum fine of Rs.1,000 from those found without mask in public places.

 

 

The Kolkata Police booked more than 3,000 people during the five-day Durga Puja festival, which started on October 22, for not wearing masks. In July, the city police has launched the 'MaskUp Kolkata' campaign.

According to police data, 731 people were booked on the first day, 595 on Saptami, 609 on Asthami, 665 on Nabami and another 600 people on Bijoya Dashami, the last day of the festival.

In Odisha, the penalty for not wearing a mask in public amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic was doubled from Rs.500 to Rs.1,000 for first-time offenders, and Rs.5,000 for subsequent offenders in the state.

In September, Governor Banwarilal Purohit promulgated the Tamil Nadu Public Health Act, 1939 (Second Amendment) Ordinance, 2020, that made violations of COVID-19 lockdown and physical distancing norms 'compoundable offences'.

A fine of Rs.5,000 would be imposed on those violating the standard operating procedure (SOP) issued for salons and spas, gymnasiums, commercial establishments and other public places. Those not wearing a face mask in public places will have to pay Rs.200.
