The Mumbai police on Tuesday issued a series of tweets, following the suicide of a 23-year-old youth who jumped to his death from his hotel room in Bandra.

Arjun Bharadwaj, a 23-year-old engineering student who took his life on Monday evening by jumping off the window of his hotel romm at Taj Land's End suffered from depression.

He had come from Bengaluru and was studying in Mumbai at an engineering college. According to police, the youth had checked into the Taj Lands End hotel at 3 am and had submitted all the identity proofs and documents.
Before jumping from the hotel room window, Bhardwaj in the video gives steps to end one's life by first writing notes to people, then getting drunk — he is seen smoking and consuming alcohol — enjoying the view from the hotel room and eating bacon pasta. Later, he ends the video claiming that he will not be recording when he jumps, and bids goodbye to friends.

According to the World Health Organisation, who will be focusing on mental health this World Health Day, depression is the leading cause of ill health and disability worldwide. According to the latest estimates from WHO, more than 300 million people are now living with depression, an increase of more than 18% between 2005 and 2015. Lack of support for people with mental disorders, coupled with a fear of stigma, prevent many from accessing the treatment they need to live healthy, productive lives.

The new estimates have been released in the lead-up to World Health Day on  April 7, the high point in WHO’s year-long campaign “Depression: let’s talk”. The overall goal of the campaign is that more people with depression, everywhere in the world, both seek and get help.
