West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has positioned herself as one of the top contenders to challenge BJP’s hegemony in the upcoming 2019 elections and it appears to be reflecting in her musical choices as well.

The West Bengal CM who embarked on a ten-day trip to Germany and Italy for the annual Bengal Global Business Summit was seen walking the streets of Frankfurt where she garnered some attention by playing a street musician's accordian.

For the uninitiated, Banerjee’s a more-than-decent amateur piano player who shares the Bengali Bhadrolok's inclination for painting and singing. In Germany, where she has gone to drum up business for Bengal, she could’ve been sending a musical message to her opponents as she played the gospel classic which became a counterculture folk anthem in the 1960s against the Vietnam War.

Popularised by the likes of Pete Seger and Joan Baez, the same song was also very popular in Bangladesh during their freedom struggle (Amra Korbo Joy) and has a popular iteration in Hindi as well (Hum Honge Kamyaab) The West Bengal CM walked the streets, enjoyed a cuppa and even showed Mickey Mouse how to hold a tune.

Here’s what one Facebook user posted: “So we walk about the town by the Main river this morning with Didi, talking about Bengal and politics. She stopped by at the old town for a quick cup of coffee and chatted with a street musician in a Mickey Mouse costume, who gave her a chance to play the accordion he was playing. CM quickly keyed in the ‘hum honge kamiab’ or ‘amra korbo joy’ tune on it and people actually stopped by to listen to an Indian woman in a saree, playing the accordion, in the heart of a German city! #frankfurtdiary #CMvisitsGermany

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday pitched for investments from German businessmen, making a case for the state's strategic location, skilled workforce and availability of land bank. Addressing an audience of German industrialists at Frankfurt, Banerjee said that both the countries share a lot of common interests. "We have the best of relations between both the countries. Germany is excellent in manufacturing, economic activities and football. West Bengal loves football, too," she said.

The CM projected West Bengal as a "strategic location" and a gateway for many South and South East Asian nations like Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Singapore, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur. "Bengal is the heart of eastern India and also of the north-eastern states," she said.

The state was number one in skill development, MSMEs, agriculture, e-governance and ease of doing business, and has land bank and land map, the chief minister said. Banerjee is currently on a 12-day visit to Germany and Italy.
