Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday told a gathering of intellectuals and professors that if the Congress comes to power, then centralisation will be reversed.

"I can make this promise: Centralisation of education has happened, and your autonomy has been taken away. We will reverse the situation cent per cent. As soon as the Congress party comes to power, your autonomy, independence, and freedom of thought will be restored," said Gandhi.

Gandhi's was interacting with academicians from across the country at the Siri Fort. He said that today there are two visions of India; the Congress' vision that involves the people of India and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh's vision that of a "golden bird".

"This view considers India to be a product, which has to be monetised and utilised. What we are fighting is the attempted capture of this 'golden bird' by the RSS. They have understood very clearly that electoral battle for them, they can win it once, but they can't repeatedly win it. They are now are saying that elections will come and go, so let's capture all of India's institutions," he said.

Gandhi said for him not allowing the teaching system to express themselves is non-negotiable for him. "A teacher needs to have the sense that he has a future and he is giving something to the nation and the nation is giving him something in return. What is non-negotiable for me is the idea that you can have teachers on contract and fire them at will and not give them a vision of a future; you simply cannot have harmony in the classroom then," said Gandhi.

He also accused the RSS of trying to take over all the institutions in the country. "The Supreme Court, the Election Commission, all these are being systematically captured. The idea is that there should be no institution where its tentacles have not spread," he said.
