The family of the lone hostage survivor Harjit Masih is angry. Claiming the government had ignored Masih's claims for the last three years ever since he claimed all the 39 Indians died in Mosul, they say today he stands vindicated.

"My brother stood firm on the statement he gave three years ago. The government may tarnish his image now by saying he was an agent and had sought help from a Bangladeshi to flee but he was proved right," said Robin Nahar, cousin of Harjit Masih.

Talking to DNA from his village in Gurdaspur district of Punjab, Nahar said his cousin had always remained firm on the fact that the abduction was done by IS and that the 39 persons were killed in 2014, "When Harjit returned to India three years ago, he told us time and again that he saw the 39 Indians being shot dead by IS militants right in front of his eyes."

Asked about his cousin, Nahar said that Masih had suffered from post traumatic stress disorder for more than a year after his return from Iraq. "He was on medication for a year because witnessing the killings scarred him badly. He has picked up the threads of his life now, but he'll never be the same person again."
