Uber cab rape: We are sorry, says Uber top executive

Uber president for Asia-Pacific region Eric Alexander was summoned for questioning on Wednesday by the Delhi Police. He reached DCP North Madhur Varma's office, in the evening, several hours late. After more than an hour of questioning, he emerged out of the meeting and disclosed to the media that he told the police 'we are sorry.'

After two days of fast-paced events, things settled down to cruising speed in the Delhi rape case, with the maximum heat felt by Uber, the international cab sharing company, which has been found to have flouted several laws, and has been charged with cheating. Delhi Police officials had qustioned top Uber executives on Tuesday. It surfaced that not one of the over 4,000 cab drivers that it uses was background-checked.

As for Shiv Kumar Yadav, the police have him in their custody for another day. Yadav has confessed to raping the 27-year-old woman executive on Friday night in his cab, and he has disclosed that he has a string of rapes and molestations behind him.

The police have also retrieved the iPhone given to Shiv Kumar Yadav by Uber and with which he used to communicate with the cab sharing company, using app, while on the prowl. Police said the phone was recovered from the home of his wife in Mathura. Yadav has told the police that he was always on the prowl at night for a victim to rape.

Meanwhile, although Uber on Wednesday said it has ceased its operations in the national capital complying with a government ban imposed on it three days ago, the Uber app continues to function. It is still being used for hiring Uber cabs. This was admitted to by the authorities on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, in related news it has emerged that several politicians of all hues have been desperately trying to make contact with the 27-year-old rape-survivor, to get publicity. One of them was a prominent spokesperson and

Member of Parliament from the ruling BJP. Sources in the police said the traumatised woman executive has point-blank refused to meet anyone other than investigators.
