National president of the BJP Mahila Morcha, Vijaya Rahatkar on Wednesday criticised West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and stated that in spite of being a woman, her state tops the list in atrocities against women.

"According to the recent report of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), West Bengal is ahead in violence against women. Domestic violence is the highest here and it also leads in the number of acid attack cases. Of the 283 acid attacks last year, Bengal alone accounted for 76 cases and affected 83 victims. In spite of there being specific Supreme Court guidelines in terms of storage and sale of acids, it is flouted rampantly in West Bengal and the state government has failed to check it," she said after a day-long meeting with the Bengal BJP women's wing.

She also said that Bengal heads the list of cases of human trafficking. "Bengal shares its border with countries like Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan because of which human trafficking is very high here. Of the 8132 cases nationwide last year, Bengal registered 3579 cases. The state has a woman Chief Minister and we expect her to be sensitive but we find the government here is insensitive," she said.

She also said that her instruction to the Bengal chapter was to put up a movement against this government.
