West Bengal government has once again locked horns with the Centre. This time the tussle is over the celebration of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel's birthday. The Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry issued a directive to all educational institutions asking them to organise a 'unity run'.

The state government, in turn, asked all the state-run educational institutes to ignore the Centre's directive.

To observe 'Nation Salutes Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel' on his birth anniversary on October 31, the directive said that education institutes must conduct a unity run and put up plays. They have also been asked to send video recordings of the event to the University Grants Commission (UGC).

A visibly disturbed State Education Minister Partha Chatterjee said that the state will celebrate Patel's birthday but in its own way and not according to the guidelines of the Centre. "Paying tribute to a national leader is one thing, but how can the Centre impose ways to observe that? Sending a video recording of the event to the UGC is especially objectionable," Chatterjee said.

This development comes after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced her refusal to link her phone with Aadhaar on October 25 .

The state had, in earlier occasions, too, ignored HRD instructions. In August, the HRD sent directives to all educational institutions to celebrate Independence Day in a set format, which the state did not abide by. Later, on September 11, the HRD directed educational institutes live telecast the PM's speech at the World Parliament of Religions in Chicago. This, too, the state ignored.
