Controversies erupted in West Bengal once again on Monday following inter-party clashes between the BJP and the TMC after the unsettling news of a BJP candidate being brutally kicked at came into light. This occured in the backdrop of by-polls in the state, specifically at the Karimpur Vidhan Sabha constituency where BJP did not score well in the Lok Sabha polls but might now have unwittingly found an issue which will piggyback the party into popular appeal in the region.

BJP candidate Jayprakash Majumdar was on Monday kicked and beaten at by a group of unidentified, following which a video went viral which clearly shows Majumder being brutally beaten by a mob on the road in Karimpur's Ghiaghat before getting kicked into a ditch by the adjoining shrubbery. The video, recorded by the media, has brought in a storm of condemnation from political commentators and analysts across the spectrum.

On Monday, Jayprakash Majumdar visited a polling booth at Ghiaghat, the Islampur Primary School, where he found a Presiding Officer using two cellphones, which is in gross violation of Election Commission of India (ECI)'s rules. In addition to that, the BJP candidate also found a room adjoining the booth, where 11 people were engaged in cooking. As soon as he started protested against these things, the situaton in the region got tense and culminated in a violent encounter whereby the BJP candidate was beaten up and kicked by a mob. Following this, the BJP lodged a complaint against prime accused Tarikul Sheikh and nine others, alleging the TMC of being behind the act of thuggery. BJP leader Mukul Roy, too, lodged a complaint with the ECI in Delhi, asking for the arrest of Nadia district magistrate and Police Superintendent for allegedly being in cahoots with the accused. According to sources, the state BJP has already sent a list of names for the accused to the ECI office in Delhi, urging prompt action.

The BJP has highlighted this issue with natonal importance since it serves the saffron party some potential electoral advantages as far as the West Bengal scenario is concerned. Even though Jayprakash Majumdar was affected in a remote village in Nadia, the video has already gone viral across the country, which had elicited an angry reaction from the populace. Central BJP leadership has already summoned a report regarding the incident, even Union Home Minister Amit Shah has personally inquired into the matter. This brings up a clear picture of the breakdown of law and order in West Bengal, an image which favours the state BJP in their electoral prospects, since the party has always insisted that the West Bengal administration, siding with the ruling Trinamool Congress, has been targetting workers and supporters of the saffron party with vindication. The recent event serves as substantial evidence for that.

Mukul Roy has already said that he will bring this up at the Parliament on Tuesday, providing the brutal details of the incident at the Lok Sabha. He has even gathered evidence for the same, sources said. In addition to this, the BJP is also looking to bring up the alleged complicity of the West Bengal police in the event, where they will question why the police did not arrest the nine TMC workers against whom the complaint was lodged. The BJP also carried out several protests in West Bengal on Monday condemning the incident.

Meanwhile TMC leader Partha Chattopadhyay has pitched in to comment on the incident. He said, "We have to first verify who threw the kick." He later hinted that the kick might well have been thrown by a BJP worker, thereby staging an event that will further their electoral prospects since the BJP, Chatterjee alleged, knew they were going to lose the polls. "We have to verify if it's done by someone from the BJP side or if it is indeed the work of a mob," the TMC leader said.
