Watch: Trapped in submerged car, family of 4 saved by locals in a miraculous rescue in Navi Mumbai's Taloja

A dramatic footage of the rescue shows members of the family being brought to safety one by one from the submerged car.

As heavy rains pounded parts of Maharashtra including Mumbai on Monday, several people found themselves stuck on flooded streets. One such family was trapped in their car in Navi Mumbai's Taloja as the vehicle was almost submerged in the river water. 

They, however, had a narrow escape as locals came to their rescue and pulled them out with the help of a rope. 

A dramatic footage of the rescue shows the family sitting on top of the car and being brought to safety one by one. The locals help the family, women followed by men, as the vehicle is caught in the heavy flowing water, the video, shot on a mobile phone, shows. 

According to media reports, the incident took place in the Ghotgaon area of Taloja on Monday afternoon when the family's car was caught in the river water. Four people - 37-year-old Ashraf Khalil Shaikh, his wife Hamida and two children - were travelling in the car when it slipped off the bridge due to heavy rain in the area. 

As they called for help, locals came to their rescue and threw a rope. All occupants of the car were brought to safety one by one before the car could be washed away.

Police said that the family was helped by local residents Narayan Gangaram Patil, Lahu Narayan Patil, Laxman Waman Dhumal, Tulsiram Baliram Nighudkarav, Rupesh Rama Patil. 

The passengers of the car received only minor injuries and they went home after receiving first aid, a local police officer said.

Nearly half a dozen districts in North and Central Maharashtra received a good spell of showers on Monday with authorities releasing water from the Gangapur dam into the Godavari river in Nashik.

Parbhani, Ahmednagar, Nashik, Aurangabad and Nanded districts received bountiful rains.

Districts such as Solapur, Hingoli, Washim, Latur, Osmanabad and Beed - known as the "rain-shadow" region of the state - are yet to receive good showers, said officials from the agriculture department.

The coastal Konkan region has received excess showers (more than 2,000 mm) since the onset of the monsoon in the state. The western Maharashtra has received up to 2,000 mm of rainfall, while Vidarbha has received more than 1,000 mm of rainfall during the same period (till Monday).

The Central Maharashtra and Marathwada, on the other hand, have received less than 500 mm of rainfall since June 1, said the official from the water resources department.
