A Shiv Sena member was arrested allegedly for assaulting a 29-year-old female traffic constable on Thursday at Thane's Nitin Junction under the Eastern Express Highway flyover.

On February 25, 2016, the constable spotted the Shiv Sena member Shashikant Kalgude using his mobile phone while driving. When she gestured Kalgude to stop his vehicle, he tried to dodge her. However, she came in front of his SUV forcing him to stop the car.

Next, the constable asked him to show his driving license and the vehicle's documents. Kalgude started abusing her. He came out of the car and slapped and punched her so hard that her nose started to bleed. The whole incident has been captured on CCTV camera where the passerby are seen standing as mute spectators.

Kalgude has been arrested and booked under sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and 354 (molestation) of the Indian Penal Code. However, Shiv Sena distanced itself from Kalgude's incident saying the 'party has nothing to do with the attack'.

Shiv Sena's youth wing president and Uddhav Thackeray's son Aaditya Thackeray tweeted:

He further tweeted: "To all those tweeting to me about Thane incident, do read the Party statement on it. Office bearer or no, doesn't endorse the shameful act. This is to reiterate the shameful incident of slapping a lady constable, has no political backing, will not be shielded by anyone at all. The Party supports strong and strict lawful action. He isn't an office bearer but regardless, such acts shld be firmly dealt with by law."
