For the second time in less than a month, Pakistan has been compelled to appeal for respite after Border Security Forces pummelled their outposts in Jammu’s Akhnoor sector on Sunday

A video accessed by Zee News shows BSF targeting Pakistani outposts. The footage shows smoke from a Pakistani outpost after it was destroyed by BSF fire. The firing by BSF was done in retaliation to firing by Pak forces which had resulted in the death of two BSF personnel, including an officer. Several civilians were also injured. The heavy firing from the Pak side lasted almost 12 hours in the Pragwal area of Akhnoor, Kanachak and Khour sectors of Jammu district and ended 12 days of lull in border skirmishes.

The firing from across the border in violation of the ceasefire agreement prompted a strong and effective retaliation by the BSF, forcing Pakistani Rangers to buckle down. A commander-level meeting was held at 17:30 pm on Monday with both sides committing to ensure peace.

The BSF last month said that Pakistan had ‘pleaded’ with them to stop firing along the International Border.

Amid ceasefire violations by Pakistani troops despite DGMO level talks, the Border Security Force (BSF) officials met Pakistani Rangers on Monday to ensure peace in border areas. "A BSF-Pak Rangers Sector Commander level meeting was held at 05:30 today. Meeting went off in a conducive atmosphere with prime focus to maintain peace and tranquillity on the border," said BSF PRO (Jammu Frontier).  The next meeting is scheduled to held on June 21.

The official said that today's meeting is likely to bring firing-free environment, particularly for border area villagers on both sides. "Commanders on both sides agreed to keep talks on at every level to develop confidence between two border guarding forces," he said.

Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti has urged both the Directors-General of Military Operations (DGMOs) to talk again to stop bloodshed and shelling on the borders. “It is unfortunate that despite talks between the two DGMOs this has happened. It should not have happened. The DGMOs of the two counties should talk again because people from both sides are dying. Bloodshed and shelling should be stopped,” she said.
