Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh on Thursday referred to Kashmir as 'India occupied', but attempted to clarify when pointed out, saying that it is an integral part of India.

Speaking to the media, Singh said, "Narendra Modi is more concern about Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. He congratulates them, thanks them. He congratulated Balochistan. But he is not ready to talk to Kashmiris in India. If we want to build trust, whether in 'India-occupied Kashmir' or 'Pakistan-occupied Kashmir', then that is possible only through talks."

He further added, "PM Modi's remark cannot change the situation, they will get worse."

However, when a reporter pointed out his turn of phrase, Digvijaya Singh attempted to clarify the faux pas saying, "No, I meant the Kashmir in India... It's integral part of India."

Reacting to Digvijaya Singh's statement, Venkaiah Naidu said, "Congress has once again displayed its insensitivity on J&K issue, its own leaders are not in consonance. These statements & contradictions by Congress smells of political opportunism."

He further added, "What's consistent about Congress party's policy on Pakistan & J&K is inconsistency. Why is Congress trying to exonerate Pakistan? I appeal them to be sensitive, realistic, and act and speak accordingly."
