Counting for 102 urban local bodies polls that took place across Karnataka on August 31 has begun, amid tight security. The polling was held in 2,529 wards, spread over 29 city municipalities, 53 town municipalities and 23 town panchayats, and in 135 wards of three city corporations of the state.

According to the results declared in 2267 seats, Congress has won 846, BJP 788 and JD(S) 307.

One BJP candidate, Veerappa Siragannavar, who won from Ward Number 19 of Bagalkore Municipal Council celebrated his victory in Sourav Ganguly’s unique style, by removing his shirt.

Ganguly had famously removed his shirt in 2002 in Lords after India had beat England in the Natwest Series final.

Even though Congress and JD(S) fought separately, they have agreed to come together whenever results are hung. Together they are leading in 60% seats across the state. According to reports, Kerala CM Kumaraswamy has cancelled all engagements till lunch and is closely following the counting on television.
