An alert ticket checker saved a man’s life as he was trying to board a moving train at Kalyan station. CCTV footage shows the man tripped while boarding the train following which the ticket collector pulled him away from the coach, thereby preventing him from falling into the gap between the bogie and the platform.

Eyewitnesses said that Sandeep Sonkar, the passenger, was trying to board the Lucknow-bound Pushpak Express that was leaving Kalyan Junction’s Platform No 4. Sonkar, who hails from Gujarat, was on his way to Lucknow.

Speaking to DNA, Shashikant Chavan, the ticket checker said, “Everything happened in a matter of seconds. Sonkar was trying to board the general coach, but couldn’t as it was too crowded. He then tried boarding the reserved coach as the train was leaving the platform, but lost his balance.”

Sunil Udasi, the public relations officer with the Central Railway said, “Chavan’s presence of mind ensured that nobody was injured. His presence of mind makes us proud to have such people in our staff. He will be rewarded.”

Mumbai suburban trains probably claim more lives than terror attacks in the country. Every year, more than 15,000 passengers die in accidents on suburban services and most of the deaths occur in the Mumbai region, which records around 6,000 deaths every year. The shocking figures have been disclosed by the Public Accounts Committee of the Railways, which tabled its report in the Lok Sabha in April 2017.

Another appalling fact that has come on record is that more than 50 per cent deaths on suburban train system is due to trespassing. On the Mumbai division of suburban railways, 52 per cent deaths occur due to trespassing. The committee also found that till July, 31, 2016 a staggering number of 37,699 accident claims were pending with the Railways and that maximum number of pendency was reported from Lucknow and Mumbai, which had 9,359 and 6,055 cases pending.
