The labourer, Md Afrazul Khan, who was accused of love jihad and brutally murdered in Rajasthan, hailed from a village at Kaliachak in Malda district of West Bengal and family members of the 47-year-old said he has been falsely implicated before being hacked to death.

The rest of what remains of the family, Khan’s wife and three daughters, had been shell-shocked since the phone call they received at about 3 pm on Wednesday, informing them about his murder.

“He was murdered because of his faith and they had spun a yarn around the murder to justify it. I want the murderers to be hanged in public,” said his wife Gul Bahar Bibi.

She said that he used to work there as a labourer. He had had his last conversation with his family back in Malda, on December 5.

He is survived by his wife and three daughters – Jyotsna Khatoon, Rejina Khatoon and Habiba Khatoon – of whom, Jyotsna and Regina are married and the youngest one is a student of Class IX of a local government school. He was supposed to fix the marriage the youngest one later this month.

“It is part of a big conspiracy. The fact that his brutal murder was taped and circulated on social media is proof enough. The murderer butchered him while he kept on crying for mercy, doused him with kerosene and set him ablaze. Our relatives in Rajasthan are in touch with the police and we hope administration works towards unearthing the truth,” Rejina said.

Khan had been working there intermittently for the last 12 years and as soon as he would gather some money he would return to his native place. He had returned about three months ago.

Since early morning, friends, relatives and neighbours had been coming over to their place offering solidarity and enquiring about when the body would be brought over for the last rites. “He was the only earning member of the family. If the government doesn’t help them, soon the mother-daughter duo will have nothing to eat,” said a 50-plus neighbour.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee too had condemned the act. ‘We strongly condemn the heinous killing of a labourer from Bengal in Rajasthan. How can people be so inhuman? Sad’, she tweeted.

District police authorities have alerted Kaliachak Police Station and they were trying to ensure that there is no flare up after Khan’s murder. “So far, the situation is under control, but we are extremely alert. It is a very sensitive issue,” said an official of Kaliachak PS.
