Amid reports from various states of computers getting attacked by crypto ransomware 'WannaCry', Information Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad sought to allay fears saying "isolated incidents in Andhra and Kerala have taken place, but there has been no impact on National Informatics Centre (NIC) Systems".

"There is no major impact in India unlike other countries. We are keeping a close watch. As per the information received so far, there have been isolated incidents in limited areas in Kerala and Andhra Pradesh… The systems run by the NIC were secured and running smoothly," Prasad said.

"Software patch has been installed in systems to counter ransomeware, system up-gradation to be finished by June," Prasad added.

Bracing up for the threat, the government is on high alert, monitoring critical networks across sectors like banking, telecom, power and aviation to ensure that systems are protected of possible cyber attack by ransomware 'WannaCry' and country's vital networks do not get disrupted.

India's Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has laid down steps for users and organisations on safeguarding their computers from the attack.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) in a statement said it has activated a "preparedness and response mechanism" by instructing CERT-In to gather information on this attack.

'WannaCry' has disrupted networks in over 150 countries, including Russia and the UK, and is being termed as one of the most widespread cyber attacks in the history. The ransomware, which locks crucial files and data unless the user pays a ransom of $300 Bitcoin, has affected over two lakh systems globally.
