Border Security Force (BSF) Inspector General Ashok Kumar on Sunday confirmed that a blast took place on the Pakistan side of the Wagah border, adding that India, though on high alert, is 'completely safe'.

"A blast occurred on the Pakistani side of Wagah at around 6.15 pm on Sunday, around 500 metres away from the border. Some people are saying that it was a cylinder blast but it could also be an attack. Our side is completely safe and as a precautionary measure, we have doubled the number of BSF guards," Kumar told ANI.

"We have been trying to contact the Pakistani authorities but as of now we haven't been able to get in touch with them," he added. Kumar also said that to prevent any untoward incidents, the security in the state had been increased.

"Our side is safe. We are alert and we have increased our security. Further, we are in constant touch with all district officials and the state police," he said.

A reported 52 people were killed and a further 200 people were injured after an explosion took place in the parking area of the Wagah border, after the flag-hosting ceremony had ended. Pakistan Rangers have reportedly sealed off the area as security and rescue personnel have rushed to the site. All hospitals in Lahore have also been put on emergency.

Wagah, lying on the Grand Trunk Road, is the only road border crossing between India and Pakistan.
