Giving a clean chit to Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in the Vyapam scam, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) rejected allegations that the computer hard discs seized from a suspect were tampered.

The agency also filed a chargesheet against 490 accused.

In the chargesheet filed before a special CBI court, the agency said the forensic analysis of the hard discs seized from Nitin Mohindra, a Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board official, by the police has shown that no files having letters 'CM' were stored on them. The hard discs were being considered as crucial evidence in the multi-crore recruitment scam, the charges for which were levelled by Congress leader Digvijay Singh and whistle-blower Prashant Pandey. Pandey had also submitted two pen drives — to the Delhi High Court and the CBI — carrying excel sheets, claiming that the hard disc drives seized by the Indore Police in 2013 were tampered to remove 48 references to "CM" from the record. The hard discs were seized by the Indore Police and later handed over to the CBI for forensic examination in 2015, following a Supreme Court order in this regard, sources said.

The CBI had submitted the status report containing the findings of the investigation of the alleged tampering to the SC.

The Vyapam case relates to massive irregularities in recruitment for various Madhya Pradesh government jobs. The CBI had registered multiple FIRs in the case. Those chargesheeted included three Vyapam officials, 17 middlemen, 297 beneficiary candidates, and 170 guardians of these candidates.
