Nation is bigger than the party and people, not the vote bank, are the government's priority, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Friday, while addressing farmers at Shahanshahpur in his parliamentary constituency Varanasi.

The PM further said that at the time he took over, corrupt people were looting the honest ones, but he fought a battle against black money and corruption, and ensured that the public money went back to them.

"Linking Aadhaar has put an effective check on corruption. Now, even small traders are getting GST registration done to contribute towards nation building. We have a different culture and character. My government will not let people's sacrifices go to waste and will continue to work for their welfare and development of the nation," Modi said.

Inaugurating a Pashudhan Arogya Mela, Modi said: "Animals are not vote banks, so the previous governments and other political parties ignored them. But, I am happy to launch welfare schemes for them as well." He also laid the foundation stone for an animal hospital and inspected medical facilities available for bovines at the fair.

Speaking on the occasion, CM Yogi Adityanath assured Modi that Pashudhan Arogya Melas will be organised across the state to boost dairy farming.

Pointing out that such fairs could bring a new economic revolution in the country, Modi reiterated his promise to double the income of farmers by 2022, and said he was happy that Uttar Pradesh has also adopted the Gujarat model of White Revolution.

Distributing certificates to families under PM Awas Yojana, he charged the previous (Akhilesh) government of taking no interest in the welfare scheme. "Despite repeated reminders, they did not take any interest. When we pressed further, they sent a list of only 10,000 poor families. I am happy that Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has taken a lot of interest and got as many as 9.70 lakh families registered under the scheme," he said.

Modi further reiterated his government's resolve to provide houses to all homeless by 2022. The PM pointed out that it was a big challenge. "Agar mushkil kaam Modi nahi karega to kaun karega (If Modi won't take up the difficult tasks then who else would take them up)?" he quipped.

"It is a mammoth activity. We have to build so many houses that it will be equivalent to creating a European country within India. The construction activity will generate employment. We have to ensure that all homeless get a roof on their heads by 2022," he said.

The PM also did shramdaan (effort donation) at the Mushar Basti in the area and laid a foundation stone for a toilet for a Dalit family. "I am overwhelmed to see the PM digging a toilet pit for my family. My life has changed overnight by his presence at my hut," Arvind, a Dalit, said.

"No one wants to live in unhygienic conditions. A cleaner India will be a healthier India. The UNICEF survey claims that people can save Rs 50,000 a year by having a toilet. It is the duty of all individuals, families, and communities to have a toilet in each household," the PM said.

He further said that he was impressed to see 'Izzatghar' painted on the walls of a toilet in Mushar Basti. "They have coined a new term for shauchalaya, and have promised to make the area open defecation free by October 2," the PM said.
