Ahead of a possible shake-up in the Punjab unit of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), its MLA, Sukhpal Khaira, on Saturday sought a "free hand" to the state unit chief in restructuring and fixing its own agenda to perform better in the upcoming municipal corporation (MC) elections.

After its dismal performance in the Assembly polls, the party is now eyeing to bolster its sagging image in the MC polls to be held in four cities in June. The party is also keen on contesting the bypolls for Gurdaspur Lok Sabha seat, left vacant with the death of actor Vinod Khanna, according to Leader of Opposition HS Phoolka.

However, with party workers disillusioned with the Delhi leadership, the demand for more autonomy of state leaders in taking party decisions has gained ground. AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal has called a meeting of party MLAs at his residence in New Delhi on May 8 to hold a discussion on restructuring the state unit. According to sources, the party is set to hold deliberations over restructuring the party formation in the state, including appointing a party president for Punjab, instead of a Convener in the meeting.

At present, Gurpreet Singh Waraich 'Ghuggi' who had unsuccessfully contested the Batala seat holds the position of party Convener. "Punjab is more conducive to a district-wise party set-up, instead of zonal heads and a Convener. The party needs a strong state president who should be given authority in restructuring the party in such a challenging time," said party's Chief whip Sukhpal Khaira, who is also a contender for the post of the State party president.
