Bharti Singh, wife of Union minister VK Singh, has filed a police complaint against Gurgaon-based businessman, Pradeep Chauhan, alleging that he was trying to extort Rs 2 crore by blackmailing her with 'doctored' audio and video clips.

According to a First Information Report (FIR) filed by her at Tughlaq Road police station on August 12, Chauhan, a friend of her nephew, threatened that he will "make public doctored video and audio clips" unless she paid him Rs. 2 crore. He allegedly further threatened to ruin her husband VK Singh's reputation as well.

In the FIR, Bharti alleges that Chauhan called her several times from two numbers on August 6 after midnight. Recently, Chauhan has uploaded a video on YouTube levelling false allegations against the family, Bharti added.

In the complaint, Bharti states that she is unaware of the contents of the recordings and she suspects her life to be in danger since the accused Chuahan possesses a licenced revolver.

The Delhi police have filed a case of extortion and criminal intimidation in this matter. Sources within police said that Chauhan has already been questioned.

VK Singh, who joined the BJP in 2014 after retiring as the Army Chief, was elected to Lok Sabha from Ghaziabad constituency in Uttar Pradesh and went on to become Union minister of state for foreign affairs. As a minister, he, along with immediate family members, are entitled to 'Y' category security – that of 10 police personnel. Singh's official residence, which falls in the Lutyens' Zone, is a high-security area with bureaucrats and politicians as neighbours.

At the moment, the Delhi police are not providing any additional security, though, this equation may change based on the level of threat perception.
