A man, seen slapping, kicking and throwing his 10-year-son on the bed in a video recorded by his wife, was arrested by the Karnataka police on Saturday. The video had gone viral on the Internet and the 37-year old has been identified as Mahendra Kumar, a plumber from Bengaluru.

Kumar also whipped his son with a leather belt and a mobile phone charger, the police said, adding his wife shot the video to document the violence and show it to their child later to instil fear in him. Parents say they were punishing him for lying repeatedly.

The video was leaked on to the Internet on January 25 when Mahendra's wife's phone experienced a technical snag and gave her phone to a shop for repairs. The owner of the shop saw the video and put it on social media, police said.

The video was shot on November 17, 2017.
