A day after Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) leaders called a total shutdown in the hills, following the raids at the GJM party office and residences of some of its leaders, incidents of violence were reported at the hills.

Several government vehicles were damaged on National Highway 10. The medical unit at Rammam Hydel Project was set on fire on Bijanbari Road in Lodhoma. A help desk of the State Electricity Development Corporation was also razed. GJM members also carried out a demonstration near Singmari.

With shops keeping their shutters down, and schools remaining closed, the situation continued to be tense on Day II of the strike. All important roads were manned by police and paramilitary personnel. A huge Army posting was seen at Patlaybas near the GJM office. In several places at Chowkbazar, clusters of tourists were seen stranded on the road as they had been asked to leave by hotels without any provision for transport to Siliguri.

Construction workers and hotel employees found it difficult to commute in the morning. Later in the evening, they were ferried to Siliguri in trucks meant to carry construction materials.

It was also alleged that TMC workers were driven out of their homes by GJM workers. Anuka Rai, president of the TMC women's wing said, "They had ransacked my place and we were forced to leave. A complaint has been lodged at Darjeeling Sadar PS."

The state government has written to the Centre for an additional eight companies of central forces to deal with the situation.

In addition, a seven-member team, comprising four IPS officers — S Yadav, A Kaliyan Y Raghubanshi and Bhavna Gupta — and three WBPS officers have been deputed at the hills

In another development, the Calcutta High Court on Friday, upholding its 2013 order, had declared the bandh at Darjeeling as illegal. It has also asked the state to submit a report stating the kind of loss that had been incurred since trouble began on June 9.
