The Indian textiles and garment industry will soon get its own "size-India" fit. Union textile minister Smriti Irani made this announcement on Sunday at the Textile Conclave during the Vibrant Gujarat Summit 2019. Irani said that the systematic study of consumer market in India would begin soon.

"In our nation, never before a study was done to ascertain the strength and magnitude of our domestic market. The UK has its size, US and Europe too has size in measure but India does not. Soon a Size India project will be rolled out for the first time," she said in the presence of Gujarat Chief minister Vijay Rupani and several textile industry players.

Irani added that 207 items had been included in the HSN code to leverage the growth of the Indian textile market driven by technologies. She also added that the Centre under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi was poised to make some good announcement over taxes on exports for the industry in days to come.

Rupani said that the textile industry serves to people from all walks of life. "I mean to say that the consumer base of this industry lies in rural and urban sectors both. Textile sector in Gujarat needs to grow with the help of modernisation. We have recently made announcement of several schemes," he said.

The players from industries like BK Goyanka from Welspun Group, Kuleen Lalbhai from Arvind Group, and others spoke on the issue.

28,360 MoUs signed at VGS

Curtains came down on the ninth edition of Vibrant Gujarat Summit on Sunday with the signing of a record-breaking 28,360 MoUs. But the government did not disclose the size of the proposed investments. The number of MoUs signed during the 3-day meet was some 3,000 more than the previous summit. Vice-president M Venkaiah Naidu lauded Gujaratis’ entrepreneurial spirit.
