Cocking a snook at West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), a saffron outfit, on Saturday claimed they had performed “Shastra Puja” (weapon worship) at more than 300 places in West Bengal as part of Vijay Dashami celebrations.

“Vijay Dashami marks the victory of good over evil. Today, in order to unite the Hindus and protect them against the anti-national elements, we have organised Shastra Puja in more than 300 places of the state,” said VHP state secretary Sachindranath Singha.

He said that the Shastra Puja was organised mostly indoors and no armed rallies were taken out in any part of the state. “Such programmes are being held in the country for years,” he said.

Earlier this month, Banerjee had warned saffron outfits that her government will not allow any processions to carry weapons and police would strictly deal with anyone trying to carry out any such plan. But, this year, the saffron camp had planned ‘Shastra puja’ in advance on Vijay Dashami on September 30.
