Senior Congress leader and former Rajasthan Assembly Speaker Parasram Maderna died in a hospital here this morning at the age 88 following respiratory problem.
Maderna, a nine-time MLA and a Jat leader, breathed his last at 6 AM in SMS Hospital, its Superintendent Dr Virendra Singh said. The veteran Congress leader was admitted to the hospital recently after he complained of swelling in his legs and stomach, family members said. His elder son and former Congress minister in Rajasthan, Mahipal Maderna, who is in jail in connection with Bhanwari Devi's murder case, was granted interim bail by a court on February 12 to attend to his ailing father.
Mahipal's counsel said he will move an application in the court tomorrow seeking permission for his client to attend his father's funeral. The funeral is likely to take place at Maderna's native village Chadi in Jodhpur tomorrow, a family member said.
Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kailash Meghwal, former CM Ashok Gehlot and leaders across the political spectrum condoled Maderna's death. Several leaders offered floral tributes to Maderna at his Jyoti Nagar residence in Jaipur where his body was kept. Raje, in a statement, said Maderna was a leader of the masses and a true well-wisher of the farmers. "His death is an irreparable loss for the state."
Gehlot said Maderna's public life spanning over 50 years was dedicated to service of the people.
