The government should evolve a national policy to control the misuse of social media for spreading incorrect information, Rajya Sabha Chairman Venkaiah Naidu suggested during a debate on the subject in the House on Thursday.

He said the government should hold discussions with all stakeholders.

"The moment the government does something, there will be criticism and also opposition. At the same time, can you allow this situation that is happening to go on?"

Calling it a sensitive issue that has international ramifications, he said a detailed discussion on it is a must.

Minister for Information and Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad said he will hold discussions on the subject.

Several members had pointed out the recent incidents of lynching triggered by rumours on social media and WhatsApp.

Prasad said he does not want to name anyone but revealed that a notice has been issued to a group that has responded. He said it has been communicated to them that they are equally responsible if their technological platform is being used in large numbers for abuse.

"They have responded to me. They are also educating. We are taking steps, but I take this suggestion on board and will hold consultations," he said.

The matter was raised by Janata Dal (United) member Harivansh in the House who pointed out that 33 people were killed after rumours on social media.

Sukhendu Sekhar Ray from the Trinamool Congress said that recent cases of mob lynching were a result of "fake news" and rumours on social media. "Some people also say that social sites have of late become anti-social sites and also the basis of organised conspiracy,"he said.

D Raja, CPI leader, said this is happening today in the name of cow protection and in the name of preventing Love Jihad, in the name of opposing inter-faith marriages, violence has been unleashed.

"We claim that we are a civilized nation; we claim that we are a civilized society. But, what is happening to our fellow citizens?"
